Just Call Me Dia

"But love, according to Ifemelu, remains the last great hope for solving the problem of race in America. “Not in a wishy-washy, clichéd, love-will-conquer-all way,” says Adichie. “It’s very hard to undo what’s happened. But I think when you love somebody, really love somebody, you start to see the world through their eyes."

Black Girl In Suburbia (documentary trailer)

Black Girl In Suburbia is a feature documentary that looks into the experiences of Black girls growing up in predominately white communities. This is a different look into suburbia from the perspective of women of color. This film explores through professional and personal interviews the conflict and issues Black girls have relating to both white and Black communities.

Black Girl In Suburbia intends to spark an open dialogue about race, identity, and perspective among all people, in hopes that these discussions will allow us to reconsider perceptions of ourselves, others and the communities in which we live and share.

We live in a world searching for a common narrative, single stories by which we can all identify:  the “black experience,” the “greatest generation,” a common set of “American values.”  In that treacherous pursuit, we leave the histories and contributions of the overwhelming majority of human experience crumbled by the wayside.  So much of what makes all of us who we are is long forgotten or maliciously erased from recorded history by a wicked few so that they may lay claim to an achievement more accurately attributed to others.

We are not now, nor have we ever been a homogeneous people.  In fact, it is in the diversity and nuance of our lives where we find our greatest strengths and not our deepest flaws.  Reality Unkempt seeks to capture those lost narratives while creating a safe space for people to organize around their political, cultural and social desires.  Perhaps if we come to realize that what makes us different makes us great, we might appreciate the value of the individual to the collective rather than designing a collective to capture all individuals.

"Open marriage? Let me first say this, there are far more important things to talk about in regards to what is happening in the world than whether I have an open marriage or not. I am addressing this issue because a very important subject has been born from discussions about my statement that may be worthy of addressing. The statement I made in regard to, “Will can do whatever he wants,” has illuminated the need to discuss the relationship between trust and love and how they co-exist. Do we believe loving someone means owning them? Do we believe that ownership is the reason someone should “behave”? Do we believe that all the expectations, conditions, and underlying threats of “you better act right or else” keep one honest and true? Do we believe that we can have meaningful relationships with people who have not defined nor live by the integrity of his or her higher self? What of unconditional love? Or does love look like, feel like, and operate as enslavement? Do we believe that the more control we put on someone the safer we are? What of TRUST and LOVE? Should we be married to individuals who can not be responsible for themselves and their families within their freedom? Should we be in relationships with individuals who we can not entrust to their own values, integrity, and LOVE…for us??? Here is how I will change my statement…Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship…this means we have a GROWN one. Siempre, J"

Black and Write

African-American writers have long made a lasting impression in literacy circles worldwide. From Frederick Douglass’ famous narrative on slavery to bell hooks’ eloquent description of feminism to Alice Walker’s poignant portrayal of Black women in ‘The Color Purple’ and Toni Morrison’s gut-wrenching words in ‘The Bluest Eye’, the literary works of Black people have left their mark on millions around the world. Southern Gurl Productions is creating a documentary that offers a behind-the-scenes view of an American-based writers’ conference that has helped shape several best-selling authors and added their voices to the Black literary giants who made an indelible impression on us all. After 12 years and seven conferences, the Black Writers Reunion & Conference is hosting its final event in Fort Lauderdale this August. ‘BLACK AND WRITE’ will capture all aspects of this inspirational event plus authors sharing their stories of success and failure in the publishing industry. ‘BLACK AND WRITE’ portrays everyone from THE VETERANS – authors with more than 25 titles to their names and have over a decade’s worth of experience; THE HUSTLERS – authors who have published at least one book and are yearning for more; and THE NEWBIES – unpublished authors working on getting their first literary tome into print.

The Boxcar Grocer.

Walking into Boxcar Grocer in downtown Atlanta, I instantly felt good. The same warm and fuzzy feeling I fet walking in to a cozy coffee shop, a friendly cafe or even a chilled-out lunge in one of my favorite neighborhoods  And though Boxcar does have some of those elements combined, serving sandwiches and providing tables and window barstools to sit and work on your laptop, it is a corner grocery store- selling organic food.

"… To him slavery was, indeed, the sum of all villainies, the cause of all sorrow, the root of all prejudice; emancipation was the key to a promised land of sweeter beauty than ever stretched before the eyes of wearied Israelites. In his songs and exhortations swelled one refrain, liberty; in his tears and curses the god he implored had freedom in his right hand. At last it came,—suddenly, fearfully, like a dream."
